The one-year technology-demonstration mission was designed to bridge the period between 20-year-old Landsat technology and the planned (2006) Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM). The spacecraft carries three instruments, of which two continue to be operated: the Advanced Land Imager (ALI), which acquires data in 10 spectral bands that cover a wavelength range from the visible to short wave infrared and resolutions similar to Landsat; and, Hyperion, which acquires data in 220 10-nanometer-wide bands from 0.4 to 2.6 micrometers. Purpose: The purpose of this program is to sustain and enhance USGS and NASA research and development toward applications of hyperspectral and pushbroom optical scanner data within the U.S. Global Research Program and to promote opportunities in the remote sensing community to apply evolving imaging technology for government, scientific, and industry applications. USGS and NASA scientists believe both Landsat-like and hyperspectral data from EO-1 are valuable for a variety of applications, including: land cover studies; ecosystem monitoring; mineral and petroleum exploration; agricultural crop discrimination and assessment; and environmental damage assessments. Supplemental_Information: The EO-1 extended mission operates within constraints imposed by its technology-pioneering origins. For instance, only about ten scenes can be acquired daily, and each scene coversa small portion (7.5 km) of a Landsat (185 km) scene. Conversely, EO-1 has unique capabilities. The spacecraft can acquire a target scene three times in a 16-day period. The Hyperion sensor acquires data in 220 10-nanometer-wide bands from 0.4 to 2.6 micrometers. The entity (scene) ID naming convention for Hyperion data is as follows: E01HPPPRRRYYYYDDDXXXPL_REC_01 where: EO1 Satellite H Hyperion Sensor PPP Target WRS path RRR Target WRS row YYYY Year of acquisition DDD Julian day of acquisition X Hyperion 0=off; 1=on X ALI 0=off; 1=on X AC 0=off; 1=on P Pointing mode L Scene length REC- Receiving Station 01- Version Number Status: Progress: Project considered complete; Hyperion sensor remains operational Maintenance_and_Update_Frequency: None planned Keywords: Theme: Theme_Keyword_Thesaurus: None Theme_Keyword: Earth Science Theme_Keyword: Imagery Theme_Keyword: Radiance Theme_Keyword: Landsat Theme_Keyword: USGS Theme_Keyword: EO1 Theme_Keyword: Land Surface Theme_Keyword: NASA Theme_Keyword: Landforms Theme_Keyword: Photography Place: Place_Keyword_Thesaurus: None Place_Keyword: Earth Place_Keyword: Global Place_Keyword: Worldwide Use_Constraints: None Point_of_Contact: Contact_Information: Contact_Organization_Primary: Contact_Organization: U.S. Geological Survey, EROS Data Center Contact_Position: Customer Services Representative Contact_Address: Address_Type: mailing and physical address Address: USGS National Center for Earth Resources Observations & Science (EROS) 47914 252nd Street City: Sioux Falls State_or_Province: SD Postal_Code: 57198-0001 Country: USA Contact_Voice_Telephone: +001 605-594-6151 or U.S. toll free: 1-888-ASK-USGS (275-8747) Contact_TDD_TTY_Telephone: +001 605-594-6933 Contact_Facsimile_Telephone: +001 605-594-6589 Contact_Electronic_Mail_Address: custserv@usgs.gov Hours_of_Service: 0800 - 1600 CT, M-F, -6 h GMT Contact_Instructions: http://edc.usgs.gov Browse_Graphic: Browse_Graphic_File_Description: thumbprint Browse_Graphic_File_Type: JPEG Data_Set_Credit: The EO1Hyperion is a joint effort of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
