Alaska Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) Elevation Data Status

Submitted by atripp on

The USGS is coordinating a 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) effort with other Federal agency partners and the State of Alaska to acquire new statewide Alaska elevation data. Under its Geospatial Products and Services Contract (GPSC), the USGS is contracting with vendors to acquire 5-meter resolution elevation data using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) sensors flown on aircraft.

Sustainable Land Imaging User Needs

Submitted by atripp on

Landsat satellites have been operating since 1972, providing the longest continuous observation record of the Earth’s land surface. Over the past half century, the Landsat user community has grown exponentially, encompassing more diverse and evolving scientific research and operational uses. Understanding current and future user needs is crucial to informing the design of Landsat missions beyond Landsat 9.

Users, Uses, and Value of Landsat Imagery

Submitted by atripp on

Landsat satellite imagery has been available at no cost to the public since 2008, resulting in the distribution of millions of scenes each subsequent year. Additionally, tens of thousands of Landsat users have registered with the USGS to access the data. Considering the number of Landsat data users worldwide and the broad range of Landsat data applications, it is difficult to quantify the cascading benefits to society.

Using Imagery to Crowdsource The National Map

Submitted by atripp on

The National Map Corps (TNMCorps), a crowdsourced mapping project, relies on volunteers to assist the USGS National Geospatial Program by collecting and editing man-made structures data for The National Map. Through their participation, volunteers make important contributions to the USGS’s ability to provide the Nation with accurate mapping information.
