Quantifying Livestock Forage to Inform Drought Strategies

Submitted by atripp on

How bad can these drought conditions get? How much hay should I buy? How many animals should I sell or relocate to another area with a forage surplus? Land managers face these questions during a drought. Livestock operations are often restricted to dry areas with unreliable rainfall, which are generally less suitable for farming.

Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument 4-Band Aerial Collection

Submitted by atripp on

The primary objectives of the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument (KAWW),Maine, mapping project were to provide the following: an accurate, tested, and up-to-date vegetation map; a vegetation classification standardized to the U.S. National Vegetation Classification and supported by vegetation plot data collected within the Monument; and a field key to vegetation for the entire monument.

Water Use and Land Cover in the Delaware River Basin

Submitted by atripp on

The Delaware River Basin was chosen as a test bed for integrating USGS water and land use research to advance understanding on the interactions and feedbacks among climate, water availability, and land cover. Fundamental interactions can be observed from historical data and simulated using scenarios for changes in land use using projections in precipitation and temperature patterns.

Innovative Technologies to Monitor a New Crater Lake at Kīlauea Volcano

Submitted by atripp on

From May to September 2018, Kīlauea volcano experienced its largest eruption in more than 200 years. The eruption drained the summit lava lake and shallow magma reservoir, covering the volcano’s lower East Rift Zone in 35 square-kilometer of lava. Successive collapse events at the summit resulted in a collapsed crater more than 500-meter deep.

Surface Deformation Resulting from the Ridgecrest Earthquakes

Submitted by atripp on

Optical satellite observations were used to quantify ground-surface displacements resulting from the 2019 Ridgecrest, California, earthquakes. Specifically, optical images from WorldView-1, WorldView-2, and WorldView-3 collected before and after the 2019 Ridgecrest earthquakes were accessed via the ©NextView license.
