Hawaii benefits from Landsat’s thermal data, as in 2018, when the satellite tracked
lava flows from Kilauea’s major volcanic eruption. Landsat also captured the
effects of the widespread 2019 Maui fire in former sugarcane fields. The 50-plusyear
archive of Landsat data allows users to look at the same geographic areas
over time to better understand changes on the land surface.
