Balkan Flooding

The Balkan area of Europe received extraordinary amounts of rainfall during the month of May 2014, which led to the region’s worst flooding in more than 120 years of record keeping.

These Landsat images, acquired May 7 and May 23, show the area of the Sava River in southeastern Europe. The overflowing river and subsequent flooding of the area is clear in the second image.

As the flooding recedes and recovery efforts begin, Landsat imagery will be useful in monitoring the area.
