Bottomland Hardwood Restoration Monitoring

Vegetation growth is important to monitor in areas undergoing restoration. Color imagery collected using an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) at a bottomland hardwood restoration site in northeast Indiana was used to derive a vegetation height model using Structure from Motion (SfM) image processing. Data from that model were then compared to vegetation height data collected in field plots.

Tracking Rangeland Condition for Sustainable Management in Kenya

The Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) is an umbrella organization of 33 community conservancies that stretch across the arid and semiarid landscape of northern Kenya. The NRT conservancies protect iconic species such as elephants, rhino, giraffe, cheetah, Grevy’s zebra, hirola, and oryx while supporting a pastoralist, livestock-dominated region in which people’s livelihoods depend on access to grazing areas.

Topobathymetric Digital Elevation Model for Pacific Atoll at Risk from Inundation

The lack of Pacific Islands topographic (land elevation) and bathymetric (water depth) information led Department of the Interior (DOI) researchers to use advanced remote sensing technologies to develop a topobathymetric digital elevation model (TBDEM) for Majuro Atoll, Republic of the Marshall Islands. With a maximum natural elevation of only 3 meters (m), Majuro Atoll is extremely vulnerable to changes in sea level, tsunamis, storm surge, and coastal flooding.

Vegetation Mapping of Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve

The Everglades National Park (EVER) and Big Cypress National Preserve (BICY) vegetation mapping project is a component of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP). The CERP is a cooperative effort between the South Florida Water Management District, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and the NPS Vegetation Inventory Program (VIP), with funding provided by the NPS VIP and the USACE.

Comprehensive Invasive Phragmites Management Planning

The Comprehensive Invasive Phragmites Management Planning project was completed to create an adaptive management plan for invasive phragmites control in the Saginaw Bay of Lake Huron, Michigan.  Phragmites is a tall grass that chokes shorelines, limiting access for recreation activities, displacing fish and native vegetation, and creating a fire hazard.

Post-fire Emergency Stabilization and Rehabilitation (ESR) Imagery Support

The BLM National Operations Center (NOC) provides remotely sensed geospatial data products to support fire management officials conducting Emergency Stabilization and Rehabilitation (ESR) activities on wildfire-affected BLM lands. The ESR program is implemented to lessen post-fire effects such as erosion and to restore affected habitats.
