Fire Potential Index

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

The United States Geological Survey uses AVHRR satellite data and weather information to assess fuel conditions and create the Fire Potential Index (FPI) to identify areas most susceptible to fire ignition. Each day for all Federal lands, based upon historical fire records and FPI, the USGS produces 7-day forecast maps showing the probability distributions for the number of ignitions, number of fires above a given size, and conditional probabilities of fires growing larger than a specified size (1, 100 or 5000 acres).  http://firedanger.cr.usgs.gov
