The project prepares geologic maps and topical reports on the geology of the Rio Grande Rift from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to central Colorado. A major focus is on the volcanic and tectonic history of the rift, a region of extension that has been active since about 30 million years ago. The mapping is aided by the use of light detection and ranging (lidar) imagery and aerial photography.
